Why Micro Weddings and Elopements

In recent years, the wedding landscape has witnessed a significant transformation, with micro weddings and elopements emerging as the embodiment of intimate and personalized celebrations. This shift isn’t merely a trend but a reflection of couples’ desire to focus on the heart of their union, surrounded by their nearest and dearest, or even just each other. The evolution of these small-scale ceremonies is also partly influenced by global events, such as inflation, which has prompted couples to adapt and reconsider the traditional large wedding affair. Today, micro weddings and elopements represent not just a choice for simplicity and intimacy but a bold statement of love that transcends the confines of grandeur. It is also a great way to save money for other uses, such as a down payment on your first house. In this blog, we will cover how to elope or create a micro wedding, the legal considerations, and why Florida is perfect for these types of weddings.

The Appeal of Micro Weddings

Micro weddings, typically involving fewer than 50 guests, are captivating couples worldwide, offering a blend of intimacy, personalization, and financial savvy that large-scale celebrations often can’t match. The charm of these smaller ceremonies lies in their ability to focus on the details that truly matter to the couple, allowing them to invest in more unique experiences for themselves and their guests. From luxurious destination weddings with a tight-knit group to cozy backyard receptions, the micro wedding strips away the pressures of hosting a large event, paving the way for genuine moments of connection and joy.

Moreover, the cost benefits of a micro wedding are undeniable. With a smaller guest list, couples can allocate their budgets more freely, opting for higher quality in catering, venue, and decor. Or, as previously mentioned, even setting aside savings for future endeavors like a home purchase or extended honeymoon. This financial flexibility opens up the possibility for more personalized and creative elements, from bespoke invitations to custom menus and thoughtful favors that reflect the couple’s unique story and style.

Through this lens, micro weddings emerge not just as a budget-friendly option but as a canvas for creativity, intimacy, and memorable celebrations that resonate deeply with the couple and their guests alike.

Elopements Redefined

The concept of eloping has evolved far beyond its traditional image of a spontaneous, secretive flight to marry. Today’s elopements are as diverse and unique as the couples planning them, often involving careful consideration and a desire to celebrate love in its purest form, free from the expectations and complexities of a conventional wedding. This redefined approach to elopements allows couples to focus entirely on each other, creating an intensely personal and meaningful experience.

Modern elopements range from quiet, intimate ceremonies in botanical gardens to adventurous vows exchanged in one of Florida’s famous gator parks. These occasions prioritize the couple’s bond and shared experiences, enabling them to celebrate their union in a way that feels true to their personalities and relationship. Some choose to have a photographer as their sole witness, capturing raw, unfiltered moments that might get lost in a larger event. Others may invite a handful of loved ones to share in their special day, combining the intimacy of an elopement with the warmth of close family and friends.

Elopements also offer the freedom to break free from the financial and logistical constraints of traditional “big” weddings. Without the need to accommodate a large guest list, couples can focus on what genuinely matters to them. In choosing to elope, couples embrace the beauty of simplicity, the depth of their commitment, and the joy of beginning their lives together in a way that is wholly their own.

Planning Your Micro Wedding or Elopement

Planning a micro wedding or elopement, while seemingly less daunting than organizing a large wedding, still requires thoughtful consideration and careful decision-making. The key is to focus on what truly matters to you as a couple and how you envision your special day. Here are some essential tips to guide you through the planning process:

  1. Define your vision: Before diving into the details, take a moment to reflect on what your ideal wedding looks like. Whether it’s a quiet ceremony in a local park, a rustic gathering in a family backyard, or a scenic elopement on a beach, understanding your vision is the first step towards bringing it to life.
  2. Curate your guest list carefully: One of the most significant advantages of a micro wedding or elopement is the ability to surround yourselves with the people who mean the most to you. Keep your guest list short and sweet, inviting only those who play a vital role in your life and happiness.
  3. Choose the right venue: For smaller weddings (see the Central Florida venues Karin knows), the venue options are virtually endless, from quaint bed and breakfasts to private rentals and natural reserves. Look for spaces that resonate with your theme and can accommodate your intimate gathering without feeling too large or impersonal.
  4. Personalize your details: With fewer guests to cater to, you can focus on personalizing your wedding to reflect your personalities and love story. Think handmade invitations, a bespoke wedding outfit, personalized vows, and a curated menu that includes your favorite dishes.
  5. Invest in photography: Even with a smaller-scale event, hiring a professional photographer to capture your day is invaluable. These photos will be your lasting memories, so choose someone whose style aligns with your vision.
  6. Consider a wedding planner: While planning a micro wedding or elopement might seem more straightforward, a wedding planner, or just an officiant who is experienced in smaller ceremonies, can offer invaluable insights and ease the stress of coordination. Especially if you are planning something unique. Any good wedding planning service or officiant (like us 😉) will also be able to offer customizable add-ons to your ceremony, such as arches, decorations, an audio guestbook, and even a photo booth, adding a personal and creative touch to any wedding.
  7. Embrace the moment: Above all, remember that this day is about celebrating your love and commitment to each other. Keep the focus on your connection, and don’t get lost in the minutiae of planning. Whether it’s a quiet elopement or a micro wedding with your closest friends and family, make it a day that truly reflects your journey together.

Choosing the Right Vendors for Your Small Wedding

When it comes to micro weddings and elopements, selecting the right vendors plays a crucial role in bringing your intimate celebration to life. With a smaller-scale event, each detail can become even more significant, making it essential to choose vendors who understand your vision and can deliver personalized, high-quality services. Here’s how to ensure you pick the perfect team for your special day:

  1. Prioritize quality over quantity: With fewer guests to accommodate, you can allocate your budget towards securing vendors who specialize in quality and personalization. This could mean opting for a gourmet caterer who sources local ingredients, a photographer with a keen eye for capturing intimate moments, or a florist who can design unique arrangements that reflect your personal style.
  2. Look for experience with smaller weddings: Seek out vendors who have specific experience or a passion for working on smaller-scale weddings. These professionals will be more adept at offering creative solutions that are tailored towards more intimate settings. Additionally, they should be able to provide more personalized attention throughout the planning process.
  3. Personalize your vendor list: Micro weddings and elopements offer the opportunity to think outside the traditional wedding vendor box. Consider hiring a local artist to live-sketch your ceremony, a chef to prepare a private dinner, or even a musician to create a bespoke soundtrack for your day. Personal touches like these can transform your wedding into an unforgettable experience and truly make it your own.
  4. Communicate your vision clearly: When meeting with potential vendors, be clear about your vision for the day and the intimate atmosphere you wish to create. Share inspiration photos, mood boards, or any specific ideas you have in mind. This will help vendors understand your expectations and ensure that they are a good fit for your wedding.
  5. Read reviews and ask for references: Don’t hesitate to ask for references from previous clients, especially those who have had a similar-scale wedding or elopement. Reading reviews and speaking with past clients can give you insight into a vendor’s reliability, flexibility, and ability to deliver on their promises.
  6. Consider packages designed for smaller weddings: Some vendors offer packages specifically tailored for micro weddings or elopements, which can simplify the planning process and offer better value. These packages often include the essential services needed for a smaller celebration and can sometimes be customized to suit your needs. Also, many vendors will offer a discount when booking on a weekday. Just FYI, we do too: our officiant service is $250 Monday through Thursday.

By carefully selecting vendors and wedding planners or officiants who share your vision and understand the nuances of planning a micro wedding or elopement, you can ensure that every aspect of your day is executed flawlessly, reflecting the intimacy and uniqueness of your special day.

Eloping in Florida offers a blend of romantic settings, from sun-kissed beaches to enchanting gardens. To ensure your elopement in the Sunshine State goes smoothly, here are the legalities you need to consider:

  1. Marriage license requirements: In Florida, couples must obtain a marriage license from a county clerk’s office, and it must be a clerk’s office based in Florida. You do not need to be a Florida resident to marry in Florida. Both parties must be present and provide valid photo ID (such as a driver’s license or passport), and Social Security numbers if they have one. For non-U.S. citizens, a valid passport or other legal identification is acceptable.
  2. Waiting period: Florida has a 3-day waiting period for residents from the date the license is issued before the marriage ceremony can legally be performed. For non-residents, this waiting period is waived, making it an attractive option for couples eloping from other states or countries, such as the UK.
  3. Age requirement: Individuals must be at least 18 years old to marry without parental consent. Persons aged 17 can marry with the consent of at least one parent or guardian, provided their intended spouse is no more than two years older.
  4. Officiants and witnesses: Florida law requires all marriages to be solemnized by an ordained minister, priest, rabbi, clerk of the circuit court, or a notary public of the State of Florida. While witnesses are not legally required to validate the marriage, having one or two present can add a personal touch to your ceremony and assist with photography. At Hearts and Souls, we have an in-house notary and ordained ministers who can help with any marriage paperwork, and the marriage itself of course. We can ensure it is submitted on time and filled out correctly, so you can just focus on making your wedding day as perfect as you have always pictured.
  5. Filing the marriage license: After the ceremony, the officiant is responsible for filing the marriage license with the county clerk. Couples can then get certified copies of their marriage certificate, usually within a few weeks, which serve as official proof of marriage. As part of our officiant service, we file the paperwork for you and include three certified copies. If you are interested in hearing more or a free consultation, then please contact us here.
  6. Considerations for destination elopements: For those traveling to Florida to elope, planning ahead is key. Leave time to pick up your marriage license in person before the ceremony. Also, research and book your officiant and any vendors (like photographers) well in advance.

Conclusion: Sealing Your Love Story in the Sunshine State

Micro weddings and elopements in Florida offer a uniquely intimate way to celebrate the beginning of your life together. They strip away the complexities and pressures of large-scale weddings, allowing you to focus on what truly matters: your love for each other. It can also make for a great story for years to come. Whether you choose a serene beach at sunset, a lush garden at dawn, or a quick ceremony in a historic courthouse, your wedding day should reflect your own personal journey and no one else’s.

As we’ve seen, the appeal of smaller weddings is not just in their intimacy, but also in their ability to be deeply personalized and often more financially attainable. By understanding the legal requirements, selecting the right location, using a qualified officiant, and focusing on the joy of your celebration, you can create a day that’s not only memorable but profoundly meaningful.
